Heat-Related Hazards

Many parts of the GC operate at extremely high temperatures, posing a risk of serious burns. These areas include but are not limited to:

• The inlet area
• The oven and its contents
• The detector area
• The column nuts attaching the column to an inlet or detector
• The valve box

Safety Precautions:

• Always allow these areas to cool to room temperature before performing maintenance.
• To speed up cooling, set the temperature of the heated zone to room temperature, then turn the zone off once it reaches the setpoint.
• If maintenance on hot parts is unavoidable, use a wrench and wear thermally protective gloves.
• Avoid opening the oven door immediately after a heating sequence.

Electrical Hazards

Even when the GC power switch is off, dangerous voltages may still be present in the following areas:

• Wiring between the power cord and the AC power supply
• The AC power supply itself
• Wiring from the AC power supply to the power switch

When the power switch is on, additional areas with hazardous voltage include:

• All electronic boards in the instrument
• Internal wires and cables connected to these boards
• Oven motor wires
• Oven heater wires

General Safety Recommendations

• Always disconnect the GC from the power source before performing any maintenance.
• Use insulated tools and follow proper safety procedures when working on electrical components.
• Regularly inspect the instrument for signs of wear, damage, or potential safety hazards.
